Pure - Publications

This guide will assist you on adding and enriching your publications in Pure

Request a DOI for grey literature

As a VU researcher, you can request a DOI for grey literature you publish for the VU. To do so, you must register the grey literature in the Pure research information system and publish it via the VU Research Portal.

A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a so-called Persistent Identifier (PID); a permanent reference to a digital object. The DOI of a publication, dataset or software permanently refers to a landing page that provides information (metadata) about this, and if possible, also give access.

Grey literature includes material and research produced outside traditional publication and distribution channels, such as reports, policy papers, working papers, conference contributions and more.

Requesting a DOI for grey literature makes it more visible online. This can have a positive impact and makes it easier to track impact through citations.

Terms and conditions

The following requirements apply for output for which you can request a DOI in Pure:

  • The output has to be grey literature.

  • The output has to be one of the following content types:

    • Book/Report

    • Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding

    • Contribution to Conference

    • Contribution to Journal

    • Online publication or Non-textual form

    • Working paper/Preprint

  • The output has to be affiliated to the VU via at least one of its authors.

  • There is no other DOI minting organisation available that can be responsible for creating a DOI.

If your output does not comply with all of these requirements, your request will be rejected. For more information about other solutions for archiving, publishing and creating a DOI you can visit the Research Support Handbook and the Data Storage Finder.

How to prepare for a DOI request

If you believe that your case meets the terms and conditions you will need to

  1. create a record for your output in Pure - see Adding publications to Pure;

  1. add a full-text copy of your output to the record in Pure - see Upload a full-text document.

You can see the mention of the option to request a DOI in Pure when you create a record in Pure and

  1. click the 'Add electronic version(s)'-button;

Add Electronic Version

  1. select 'Add DOI of an electronic version';

  1. view the mention in yellow.

Make request for DOI via ServicePortal

If you have created a record in Pure and added the digital copy, you can request a DOI via the ServicePortal.

In the request you will have to provide

  • Subject: Request a DOI
  • Issue description:
    • Pure ID: [id number of record]
    • Title: [title of publication]

You can find the Pure ID on a saved record at the top-left

Example

Your request will be processed a colleague of the UB. This person will check the record and the full-text copy.
If everything is in order, you will receive a confirmation message and the DOI.
If something is amiss, you will receive a rejection message.
